The Little Things | Thoughts on Self-Care

Processed with VSCO with a6 preset

Josh and I are aiming to get out of the rental game and into owning our own home.  For those of you who have done this, I am sure you already know what I’m feeling these days.  I go through a bit of an emotional roller coaster every time we decide we want to put an offer on a house and it gets snatched up by someone else.  The market is pretty tight right now, so I am constantly trying to exercise patience.  It’s tough because even though I mentally coach myself not to become emotionally attached to a house, I can’t help but invest part of myself into each offer.  So it’s up when we find something we like, and it’s down when the ordeal falls through.

Yesterday I hung up my school counselor hat for the summer, so I decided to take things slowly today.  I had a few things to take care of around the house.  As you all know, laundry never seems to do itself unfortunately.  During that moment when both the washer and the dryer are going at the same time and there is nothing more you can do for a little while, I went outside to soak up sun and enjoy the beautiful day.  There is a giant plum tree in our back yard that is producing beautiful, deep purple fruit.  I reached up to pick one close to me, and I took a second to think how blessed my life is right now.  I have a loving husband, a great place to live, a job that allows me to take a two month break every year, and plums that grow in my back yard.  I could continue the list of things that make me feel lucky to have the life I do, but the point I wanted to make is to take stock of the little things.  Gathering plums from our tree today really made me stop and remember that no matter what happens with my current stressors, I am ultimately in a good place in my life right now.

You may be on an emotional roller coaster of your own right now.  Possibly if not probably one more serious than me.  I am thankful that Josh and I are in a situation where we can even think about buying a house.  I simply wanted to share my thoughts about remembering the little things that bring joy and positivity to your life that you might not ordinarily think about.  Nothing new or earth-shattering.  Just taking a moment of self care and reflection.
